Symptom description

Older leaves become pale green with beading of chlorophyll. Chlorosis and Necrosis of leaf margins, proceeding from leaf tip, can be seen in more severe cases. Easy to reveal by holding leaf to sunlight.

Made worst by

Sandy soils. Acidic soils. Potassium rich soils. Soils receiving high potash applications. Cold wet periods.

Important for

Better crop establishment. Improved winter hardiness and tillering. Better grain quality.

Cause description

Magnesium deficiency Drought can also cause marginal necrosis.

Cereals: 2-4 l/ha at 2 leaf stage to first node detectable (G.S. 12-31). For moderate to severe deficiency, repeat applications at 10-14 day intervals. 2 l/ha at flag leaf ligule just visible to anthesis complete (G.S. 39-69). Water rate: 200 l/ha.
