Uniform chlorosis allover the foliage. Mature leaves start wilting and show marginal chlorosis with subsequent necrosis spreading over the leaf blade. Finally older shoots become completely scorched. Growth and yield are severely decreased.
Acidic soils. Light, sandy soils (leaching). Low organic matter. Poorly aerated soils (waterlogged soils.) Areas with low industrial emissions.
Component of enzymes and other proteins. Necessary for chlorophyll formation and efficient N-utilization.
Sulphur deficiency (right) Plant tissue content is 0.1-0.2% dry weight normally. Even though subtle differences between N and S deficiency symptoms exist (N deficiency occuring first on older, S deficiency symptoms on younger leaves), an exact diagnosis is difficult. Plant analysis is recommended.
