Carrot cavity spot was originally thought to be a calcium deficiency disorder. In the last 10 - 15 years it was shown to be caused by the plant pathogen Pythium violae and controlled fairly successfully with fungicides. Recent reports have suggested enhance microbial degradation of these fungicides, leading to sometimes poor levels of control.
