YaraVita Actisil stimulates fibrous root growth

By: Giz Gaskin

YaraVita ACTISIL is part of Yara's Biotryg range of plant biostimulants. Actisil contains a source of organically stabilised silicon together with a range of other nutrients. One of its effects is the stimulation of root growth.

Why is fibrous root important?

The importance of fibrous roots to growers is key in strawberry tray plants. Fibrous root is responsible for the efficient uptake of less movable nutrients into the crop and more rapid uptake of soluble nutrients.

They are used by propagators and growers alike as an indication of how vigorous a strawberry plant's growth is and will be through the growing season. White root is an indication of good new root growth, the whiter the better while growing. Remember that dormant or resting root can take on a slightly yellow appearance.

At planting the roots are white but don’t have any fibrous extensions.

To investigate the effect of plant biostimulants, strawberry tray plants were treated with YaraVita Actisil via an overhead sprayer at a rate of 1.0 l/ha.

Treated vs Untreated 7days.jpg

One week after planting and first treatment. At first, the photo of the treated root looks out of focus. As you look closely however there is so much fibrous root, stimulated from the YaraVita Actisil, blurring the picture. The white root as a contrast to the original plug appears more active and larger in diameter. A good start to the trial after only 1 application.

By contrast to the treated plot, the control's roots are less fibrous. With an appearance of less diameter of white root. The cell root looks well spread as it had done with the untreated tip plug.

The trial is set to continue for another 3 weeks, x 2 applications pending.
