Variable Rate Nitrogen Mapping Available Free to Grassland Farmers

By: Philip Cosgrave

Variable rate nitrogen applications are no longer the preserve of combinable crops. Yara have launched YaraPlus an app which will allow grassland farmers create their own variable rate application maps (VRA) for grass fields for free.

It’s quick and easy to set up and use. All you have to do is sign up, map your fields and then create VRA nitrogen maps setting a target nitrogen rate with lower and higher limits. These maps can then be transferred easily over to the fertiliser spreader for use. Of course, you do need a VRA compatible spreader to use this satellite-based technology.

Using satellite imagery to create bespoke variable rate nitrogen maps, allows farmers to respond to infield differences like never before. When nitrogen is applied at the same rate it doesn’t account for these infield differences. Some parts of the field receive too much nitrogen, and some parts receive too little nitrogen. One of the main factors contributing to these differences is the application of slurry and other manures to silage fields. By using YaraPlus VRA for nitrogen fertiliser applications, we are effectively counter acting infield variation by altering the nitrogen rate above and below a specific target nitrogen rate.

The benefits of using variable rate nitrogen are more even crops, more consistent protein and nitrate levels in grass, and more efficient use of applied nitrogen. Another important element of YaraPlus, is it also allows farmers to monitor fields which are not performing, and trouble shoot potential problems using images from the previous four years.
